The
101'ers first residency began in The Charlie Pigdog Club, which was
named after the bands resident dog 'Trouble.' The club was actually a
small banquet room above The Chippenham Pub. Allan Jones of the Melody
Maker saw the band play here on 19th February 1975, and produced a
review which was printed on 26/07/75. He states: "When we arrived that February Night in 1975, there was no sign of Woody, although the band-who were named after the house number of the squat some of them shared in nearby Walterton Road-had already set up and looked like they were getting ready to play without him. Not long before they started, Woody turned up in a baggy white suit. He'd just been to see Chuck Berry at The Rainbow, and he was buzzing." There is a bit of confusion over the venue of the Chuck Berry concert. This Chuck Berry website lists the venue as Lewisham Odeon, however the ticket at the bottom of this age does indeed give the venue as The Rainbow, but with a different date, which leads me to believe the ticket is probably fake. |
The Chippenham/Charlie Pigdog Club as it is today

| It cost 10p to get in, and the band would normally transport their equipment in the back of an old hearse. According to ***blackmarketclash*** The 101'ers would play 15 times there. Alvaro, the Chilean Saxaphonist in the band, used to sell sandwiches, although this soon had to end because he was often playing in his own band as support, before taking to the stage with The 101'ers. Before long the sandwiches were given away as part of the entry fee. The Charlie Pigdog Club would later be converted into rooms. |
