The Elgin is perhaps the most well known venue associated with The 101'ers. Again, according to the excellent Blackmarketclash
site they would play here 30 times, on Tuesdays each week. The
residency began on 12th May 1975 and finished on 8th January 1976. Joe
Strummer and The 101'ers first managed to get a gig at The Elgin by
taking along a 'tiny review' and showing it to the landlord. The Elgin gigs were normally played out to packed out audiences, Julian Yewdalls excellent book captures a few photographs from these gigs. Even Johnny Rotten and Sid Vicious went along to a gig or two. |

For the last gig, the band had gone along as usual to set up, and the landlord informed them the residents across the road had got a petition together. The residency was terminated due to the level of noise. From then on the pub could only have two Irish acoustic musicians playing, who were nervous about taking the bands slot, although The 101'ers were understanding of the situation. That would be the end of the legendary Elgin residency. Today, The Elgin still hosts live music and retains most of the same
interior from 'back in the day', the only adjustment is the stage, which has
been moved to the opposite end. |
