The 101'ers

Blackmarketclash states the band first played at The Nashville Rooms in Kensington on 30th August 1975. They would play the Nashville Rooms 10 times, however it is their gigs on the 3rd and 23rd of April 1976 that are most relevant. At both these gigs they were supported by a young up and coming group called the Sex Pistols

Although it looks large from the outside, the Nashville Rooms consisted of a small stage at the end of a long room.  Most of the floor space would have been taken up by seats at tables.

Joe Strummer would first encounter Johnny Rotten on 3rd April 1976 in the dressing rooms of The Nashville. The impact the Sex Pistols had upon Joe cannot be understated, as Joe explained in the Viva Joe Strummer documentary:

"Seeing the Sex Pistols...in a crummy little pub in London called the Nashville-nobody was doing anything with one inch of the guts...the sheer audacity of what they were doing, they were the 1st people I saw...who did something heavy."

Around 30 people were present, and although The 101'ers gig wasn't recorded, The Sex Pistols set was. It is the earliest known Sex Pistols recording.

A review of the gig was printed in the NME on 17h April 1976, the reviewer (Geoff Hunt) actually appeared to be more impressed by The 101'ers than he was by The Sex Pistols. The review can be seen at the very bottom of the page.

The second Nashville Rooms gig was a more well attended gig. Again The Sex Pistols were support, and again the Sex Pistols set was recorded but not The 101'ers set.

Sadly, unlike The Elgin, The Nashville Rooms has changed a lot from the days when it hosted gigs by The 101'ers, Sex Pistols, Elvis Costello, The Jam, The Stranglers and many others. It is now known as The Famous 3 Kings and the hall where the stage was has now been given over to SKY TV and pool tables as you can see in the 2nd picture below.
